A map of the world. A map of the continent. A map of the country. And then, a map of the garden.
In the Montessori geography materials, the child travels this whole path, from the entire world down to the smallest and most personal place: the quinta where they play every day. And that's exactly where we start, because before a child can understand the world, they need to feel the ground under their feet.
But a map is never just lines and colours. It's also a question: where am I in all of this?
They're in our quinta, our family, our culture. And they're also connected to other families, other cultures, other gardens, in other corners of the world, each with their own ways of living, eating, celebrating, and caring for the land.
When a child can place themselves like this, from the garden out to the world and from the world back to the garden, they gain something no single map can show on its own: a clear sense of belonging. And it's from that sense of belonging that the confidence to explore everything else grows.
That's what our Garden Explorers will be discovering this morning, map by map.
